New Year Resolutions That Matter
It’s 2020 and the years of resolutions being based on physical appearance are gone. Here are some resolution ideas that really matter, to kick-start your list:
Learn more about an issue: Maybe it’s climate change, gender equality, modern slavery or animal rights. We live in a complex world with thousands of issues and causes competing for our attention. It can feel very overwhelming and hard to keep up. So how about starting with just getting to know one a bit better?
Take up a new hobby: It’s important to remember you don’t have to be good at something to have fun doing it. Whether it’s arts and crafts, a musical instrument, a sport or outdoor activity, hobbies are a great way to relax, disconnect and bring moments of joy into your busy life.
Reconnect with your friends: Speaking of busy, it’s easy for our friends to take a back seat when our jobs, kids, partners, life get in the way. But when we need them, our friends can be our most important support network. How about setting aside time once a month to catch up?
Ask for help: Maybe your bills are piling up, or you’ve been feeling a bit down, whatever your battlefield there are people and organizations who are here to help. It can be daunting, but why not set a resolution to ask for help if you need it.
Support a good cause: There are lots of ways you can support a good cause, whether it’s volunteering your time, donating clothes or food, making a donation, or signing a petition. Many studies have shown that the joy of giving lasts longer than the joy of getting.
Take the first step: You know that big thing in your life you’ve been putting off, why not just take the first step? Whether it’s picking up the phone, stepping out the door, or telling someone what’s going on, just take the first step.
Above all, take time to reflect on 2019. A new year can often feel like new pressure to achieve or change, but maybe 2019 was a huge year for you. Before saying ‘what’s next’, take time to look back and appreciate everything you achieved in 2019.
