Job Description

We are looking for experienced, dynamic, personable, and inspiring Lifeguard to join our aquatic team YWCA Health + Fitness Centre and assume Head Lifeguard duties in a shared capacity on our May – September bid schedule.  This successful candidate demonstrates leadership qualities, is customer service oriented, has a demonstrated track record for implementing aquatic procedures & policies and standards.

The YWCA Aquatic Area includes a 25 m UV purified pool, steam room and hot tub and offers our adult members and guests with open swims, swim lessons, registered swim programs and aqua fit classes.

Responsibilities: 

In addition to Lifeguard duties, the Head Lifeguard is responsible for the safe and smooth delivery of scheduled programs while providing support and guidance to the lifeguards.  They are responsible for the daily monitoring of the lifeguard schedule to ensure adequate coverage at all times. 

The Head Lifeguard position is (minimum) 17.5 hours per week, inclusive of 12.5 hours of deck time and 5 hours of administrative time.  Shifts may be adjusted based on operational needs.

Pay Rate:      $26.14 - $27.14 per hour

Head Guard Duties:

  • Priority at all times will be safety and coverage of the pool
  • Monitor and maintain Lifeguard schedule, arranging subs when required. Ensure coverage of all shifts and follow procedures for any shift changes.
  • Provide excellent role modelling and be a resource for team members, providing additional training/mentoring for team members as needed
  • Provide lifeguard back up for scheduled and unscheduled breaks
  • Ensure pool area is neat and free from hazards
  • Maintain Pool Office, making sure required materials for day to day operation are available, including, but not limited to: Pool Log Sheets, Incident Forms, Pool Chemicals, First Aid Supplies, Pool Safety Plan, SDS sheets, Stationary, etc.
  • Update flyers/promotion/whiteboard communication to members
  • Review log sheets and report and/or follow up on any issues to Maintenance team and Manager/Supervisor
  • Positively promote YWCA programming

Assisting the Aquatic Manager with:

  • Schedule emergency coverage, as required.  Any overtime must be pre-approved by manager.
  • Interview/screen new Lifeguards
  • Participate in the orientation of new lifeguards to the YWCA pool area, providing shadow shifts when required
  • Provide input and participate in planning and facilitating of full and mini in-services, YWCA Swim Program Training and Aquatic Programming
  • Provide input and assistance with lifeguards and bid schedule
  • Maintain facility first aid equipment
  • Other related duties as required

Lifeguard duties:

  • Supervising patrons in and around pool area and steam room
  • Opening, closing and maintaining pool area
  • Answering patrons’ questions 
  • Teaching aqua-fitness classes, swimming lessons (group and private) & YWCA Swim Prog.
  • Ensuring pool area is neat and free from hazards and reporting maintenance needs to appropriate staff
  • Testing pool chemicals and temperature
  • Light cleaning of pool equipment and guard room
  • Attending mandatory in-services, staff meetings and interim classes to maintain and upgrade safety instruction skills
  • Rendering emergency care in the facility when necessary
  • Other duties necessary for program/membership care & need

Qualifications:

  • 4 years experience  
  • Current National Lifeguard Service Award (AMOA)
  • Water Safety Instructor Certification
  • BCRPA Aqua Fitness Leader Certification
  • Standard First Aid (valid within 3 years)
  • CPR’C/AED certification (valid within 1 year)
  • Certificate or degree in Recreation Management or Physical Education (an asset)
  • First Aid Instructor Registration - Red Cross or other (an asset)
  • LSI (an asset)

  • Ability to adapt in a dynamic environment
  • Demonstrated ability to provide positive role modelling to colleagues
  • Customer service oriented
  • Demonstrated track record for recommending new aquatic procedures, policies and standards.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
  • Positive team player
  • Experience with programming and scheduling an asset
  • Competent with MS Office suite
  • A valid clear criminal record check (including working with vulnerable populations) is required.
