Facility etiquette & operating principles

The YWCA Health + Fitness Centre strives to provide a safe, clean and enjoyable environment for all.

Please be familiar with our code of conduct, etiquette and operating principles.

For the health and safety of all 

  • You must shower and remove all face, body and hair products before entering the pool area, and before / after using the hot tub and steam room 
  • Shaving, teeth brushing and spitting are prohibited in the shower, water fountains, steam room, and pool area 
  • Those who are ill or have an open wound/sore are prohibited from entering the pool area
  • Towel dry before you leave the shower area to avoid creating slippery floors (towel service is available at member services)
  • As a courtesy to others and the shared nature of the space, please avoid the use of any scented products in the facility. Scents and fragrances may cause severe allergic reactions in some people. This includes applying nail polish/remover, using scented hairspray or other hair products, scented deodorants and body lotions.

Cell phones

  • Cell phone use is not permitted in the locker rooms or in the pool area due to privacy concerns and the camera/recording features of the device   
  • Use your cell phones for music and apps in the gym but restrict conversations to the main floor lobby as a courtesy to those working out 

Locker room

  • Do not leave valuables in the lockers and always lock up your possessions. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items (locks can be rented at member services)
  • Use the Spin-Dry machine before placing swim suit in your tote locker
  • Place used towels in bins provided or in the towel chute
  • Turn off showers and faucets after use

Weight room and cardio room

  • Replace dumbbells, weight plates and small equipment after use
  • Use collars when using the Olympic bars
  • Wipe down equipment after use
  • Share the machines / work in sets with other members
  • Place used towels in the bins provided

Pool

  • Choose the lane that corresponds to your swimming ability (slow, medium, fast)
  • Swim in a counter-clockwise direction at all times
  • If you are being passed, stop at the wall to let the faster swimmer pass
  • Allow the swimmer in front of you a minimum of 5 second lead before following
