Backpacks for children from low-income families

We are in need of 150 new backpacks and school supplies for school-aged children from low-income single mother-led families in Coquitlam, Surrey, North Vancouver, Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Any quantity of backpacks would be much appreciated! Here's a list of school supplies in demand. 

Gardening /Yard Maintenance at YWCA Alder Gardens

Program Description: YWCA Alder Gardens provides affordable housing for single mothers and their children in Surrey.
Location: YWCA Alder Gardens Single Mothers Housing – 13788 71 Ave, Surrey 
Role of Volunteers: Trim hedges and weed around the community garden and property 
Volunteers: 2-3
Date: Fridays 
Time: Anytime between 10:00am – 6:00pm

Program Description: YWCA Fraser Gardens provides affordable housing for single mothers and their children in Langley.
Location: YWCA Fraser Gardens Single Mothers Housing – 20750 Fraser Highway, Langley 
Role of Volunteers: Trim hedges, weed and help beautify the property 
No. of Volunteers: 2-3 
Date: Wednesdays or Thursdays 
Time: Anytime between 10:00am – 6:00pm

Staining Patio furniture at YWCA Cause We Care House, Vancouver

Program Description: YWCA Cause We Care House provides affordable housing to single mothers and their children.
Location: YWCA Cause We Care House Single Mothers Housing – 720 East Hastings Street, Vancouver
Role of Volunteers: Staining patio furniture 
No. of Volunteers: 2-3 
Date: Monday – Friday
Time: 9am – 5pm 
Request: Purchase stain and other supplies

Self-care kits for women in need

Create self-care kits for women experiencing homelessness, substance use issues, poverty, violence, poor health or other challenges in the Downtown Eastside. Self Care Kits are distributed daily at YWCA Crabtree Corner. With your co-workers, friends or family assemble items from the list below in clear plastic bags and deliver them to Crabtree Corner. You are welcome to add other items that you think may be useful.

  • small hairbrush & hair ties
  • pads/tampons
  • underwear
  • socks
  • band-aids
  • lip balm

Drop off Location: YWCA Crabtree Corner 533 East Hastings Street, Vancouver

Delivery hours: Monday to Friday 10:00am – 3:00pm

House Warming Baskets for Families

Many of the families that move into YWCA second-stage transition housing arrive with nothing but their clothing. Second-stage housing is where women can begin to rebuild their lives away from an abusive partner. The YWCA provides furnished apartments, emotional support, information and referrals, safety planning and court accompaniment. Your group can help this difficult transition by purchasing and assembling House Warming Baskets for families when they first arrive. Below is a list of suggested items and you are welcome to add other items that you think may be useful. Approximate cost: $300

Once your Next 125 volunteer position has been confirmed you will be sent an application package containing:

  1. Application form
  2. Policy sign off document
  3. Criminal Record Check form

There is approximately a 3-week turnaround for application processing.
