How Crofton House School Helps YWCA

Why does school matter? More than just a place to learn and connect, school is about inspiring students to make the world a better place. Every student can become a leader and change-maker in their community, they just need the right opportunities to practice this vision of service.

At Crofton House School, these opportunities have generously supported YWCA program participants over the years.

For low-income single parents with school-aged children, September can be a stressful time of year with added school and child care fees. A huge help for these families is the annual Fall backpack drive, where CHS families fill new backpacks with school supplies for elementary and high school students. This past September, the Crofton House Parents’ Auxiliary delivered 300 backpacks to low-income families in YWCA programs.

In addition to the annual Fall backpack drive, students in the Crofton House Junior School support the YWCA by purchasing toys for children living in YWCA housing communities every holiday season.

For more than 10 years, Grade 7 girls from Crofton House have also volunteered at YWCA early learning and child care centres, the YWCA Thrift Shop and Crabtree Corner as part of Service Learning.

“Service learning helps girls gain leadership and interpersonal skills, such as empathy and patience, as well as respect for others. It also shows girls how their actions can directly contribute to a better society.” - Susan Hutchison, Director of the Junior School and 2017 YWCA Women of Distinction nominee

This year, Crofton House will be sponsoring Welcome to My Life, one of our after-school programs for Grade 7 girls. This program will provide volunteer opportunities for Crofton House Senior School students at several nearby elementary schools.

The YWCA is also very excited to offer girls in our programs the opportunity to apply to the Crofton House School Bursary Program, which provides financial assistance to students entering Grade 8 to offset up to 98% of the costs of attending CHS, including tuition, technology and program experiences.

Thank you Crofton House School!
