YWCA Metro Vancouver’s Statement on Racial Justice

YWCA Metro Vancouver denounces the systemic racism that undermines the safety and wellbeing of Black, Indigenous and racialized communities. As an equity and equality-seeking organization, we stand in solidarity with Black, Indigenous and People of Colour, including those among our clients, program participants, staff and volunteers.

Racial and gender inequality are inextricably linked, and embedded in our institutions and systems through policies, laws and practices. Gender inequality disproportionately impacts Black, Indigenous and racialized women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people. We must address the complex intersections of inequality if we are to create a more just and equal society and commit to personal and social change.

We also recognize that solidarity goes beyond expressions of sympathy and outrage and requires our organization to look inward and examine our own privilege, structures and systems in order to fight racism and promote diversity. This work must also prioritize the voices and experiences of those impacted.

The YWCA has a role to play in advocating for racial justice while pursuing our mission to touch lives and build better futures for women and families. This spans across our work—from access to safe, affordable housing and quality early learning and child care, to opportunities for mentorship and employment, and access to legal supports and services.

As an organization, we have a lot of work to do. We will continue to listen and learn from our community and endeavour to prioritize the experiences of racialized people in advocating for gender equity and social justice.

We welcome your feedback and are committed to engaging in continued dialogue. Kindly email communications@ywcavan.org if you have thoughts or comments on how we can do better.
