YWCA Celebrates Mother's Day

by Jenn Bateman

In celebration of Mother’s Day this year, the children of the single moms from our support groups, housing communities and YWCA Crabtree Corner were invited to be part of a special contest to write or draw something on the theme “What Makes My Mom Special”.

Winners received a gift card, courtesy of generous donors, to take mom out to dinner at White Spot!

We had lots of great entries, all celebrating the wonderful, loving mothers who make their families feel so loved and cared for. These are some of the winners, we hope you enjoy these as much as we did!

Savannah, age 9:

My mom is special because she likes to dance!

And she gives me lots of hugs and kisses.

Savannah

Adeliia, age 8:

My mom is the best mom singer ever!

Jaxon

Jaxon, age 3:

My mom is special because she knows about dinosaurs!

Jaxon

Dillon, age 8:

I love my mom, she is special to me. We are like a heart on the water of love. We have a special connection. We are so happy to be together. She always believes in me and wants me to follow my dreams. She’s the best at telling bedtime stories. She helps me at a bad time. We go on mom and son dates. We play video games together and have fun together. I love my mom because she taught me how to tie my shoes. I love my mom.

Dillon

Rainey, age 9, wrote a poem for her mom:

Adam, age 8:

The sun reminds me of my mom. My mom is like a sun because she gives a lot of love, warms, hugs me, she respects me and cares about me. I painted it with sunglasses on and different rays like mom who has different emotions and can do different things.

Adam

JJ, age 8:

My mom is special because she helps me with hockey.
And he shared a drawing and a photo!

Ryland, age 16 shared these special words:

Happy Mothers day mom I hope you have the best Mother’s Day of your life! I know COVID has been horrible and its taken a toll on everyone. But throughout all the hard times and troubles you always managed to be the best mother you could ever be.
First off, I just want to say that I wouldn't be who I am if you weren't in my life. You honestly are the best mom in the world and I don't know what I would do without you. Being honest, not even words could describe how much you have helped me and believed in me. You honestly make my life better and imaging life without you is like having a nightmare and nightmares aren't good.
But mom I really just want to thank you for everything you have done for me. And please let this be the best Mother’s Day of your life! I love you!

Celebrating all of our amazing YWCA single mothers this weekend, and all of the wonderful mothers in our community who continue to show up in so many ways for their children and themselves. Happy Mother’s Day!

If you’re a single mom living in Metro Vancouver, consider connecting with a YWCA Single Mothers’ Support Group. They are a great way to meet other single mothers and connect with resources and supports in your community. The groups are meeting weekly via Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic.
