What: As we celebrate the history and excellence of Black people this month, we are happy to invite you to join us as we learn and celebrate the excellent works of Dr. Eni. Dr. Eni recently authored and published, "Inside Intercultural Canada''. The book discusses African Identity, underbelly racism, and the experience of black Africans in Canada. Dr. Eni retired from Academia, Health care, and the Civil Society after 40 years in British Columbia.

BC Black History Awareness Society presents: Black History and Heritage Day 

What: This year we are hosting Black History and Heritage Day at the Royal BC Museum. The exhibits include images, artifacts, and archival documents, and will take place around the “Hope Meets Action: Echoes Through the Black Continuum” exhibition located in Clifford Carl Hall. This event is an opportunity to meet and talk with direct descendants about their stories and family history.

Time: 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. The estimated time to see all the exhibits is about 60 minutes; so you can plan to arrive anytime between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm and not miss a thing.

BC Black History Awareness Society presents: A conversation with Dr. Cornel West “Being a Hope Amid Crisis” 

What: This conversation will explore themes of economics, democracy, racial justice and Black identity. Host Dr. West is a professor at Union Theological Seminary and holds the title of Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. Of the 20 books he has authored, Dr. West is best known for his classics, Race Matters and Democracy Matters, and for his memoir, Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud. His most recent book, Black Prophetic Fire, offers an unflinching look at nineteenth and twentieth-century African American leaders and their visionary legacies.

BC Black History Awareness Society presents: Celebrate the power and joy of music with Dawn Pemberton and Lousie Rose 

What: Vibrant, genuine and soulful, Dawn Pemberton has deep musical roots that take her powerful voice from gospel and soul to jazz, funk and world music. Louise Rose has been called a living Canadian treasure. She is a sought-after vocal jazz ensemble clinician. She has played and sung with symphony orchestras in Canada and the United States, appeared in night clubs, operas, theatrical productions, touring shows and on cruise ships all over the world.

BC Black History Awareness Society presents: “Dynamic Diasporas” Vancouver Mural Fest: Winter Arts Fest 

What: BCBHAS has partnered with VMF Winter Arts Fest to bring you “Dynamic Diasporas”. In the fall of 2021, Creative Doaa Magdy began doing collaborative research and project development with BCBHAS. Archival images will be utilized as part of the artwork on display for Winter Arts Festival. “DYNAMIC DIASPORAS” highlights BC Black history through visual storytelling.

BC Black History Awareness Society presents: Black History Month Guided Tour at Ross Bay Cemetery 

What: Did you know there are more than 50 Black Pioneers and/or their descendants at Ross Bay Cemetery? This is a guided tour of a few of their graves and others who were influential in the migration of Blacks to the British Colony. 
Day: Sunday, February 27, 2022. Rain or shine.  
Time: Meet before 1:50pm. The tour will be 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. PT 
Where: Meet in front of Oregano Coffee Shop at the Fairfield Village Plaza, 1-1516 Fairfield Rd. This shopping plaza is across the street from the cemetery.

UBC’s Museum of Anthropology presents: Sankofa Exhibition 

What: Centered on works by contemporary artists from Lagos, Nigeria, and Vancouver, in conversation with objects in MOA’s permanent collection, this exhibition shares stories, histories and projects of African and Black affirmation. In particular, it draws connections to historical contributions and the growing vitality of Black Canadians in Vancouver. 
Exhibition Dates: November 4, 2021 – March 27, 2022  
Museum Hours: Tuesday – Sunday: 10 am – 5 pm; last Thursday of the month: 10 am – 9 pm

The BC Black History Awareness Society in partnership with the Royal BC Museum presents: Hope Meets Action: Echoes Through the Black Continuum 

What: Black “British Columbian” history has long been whitewashed in the annals of colonial history. Written, told and designed by Black voices, this exhibition reclaims and retells the complicated history of stolen people on stolen land, and how the contributions of Black leaders echo across the centuries into the present. 
Exhibition Dates: August 14, 2021 to March 31, 2022

Black Arts Vancouver Presents: Jail Fund-raiser 

What: We are hosting this fundraiser to aid members of our community who have, or are currently dealing with legal fees relating to being arrested as an Activist, Land-Defender in a movement. This money will directly aid in the reduction of legal costs paid out by those involved with protesting against police violence against Black and Indigenous bodies, unwanted resource extraction, and the continuing genocide of Indigenous peoples.
