YWCA Metro Vancouver's Statement on the Overturning of Roe vs. Wade

YWCA Metro Vancouver is saddened and outraged that the Supreme Court of the United States has overturned Roe v. Wade.

We stand in solidarity with our sister YWCAs, and all people across the United States amid this devastating erosion of reproductive and gender rights. The decision undermines nearly a half-century of progress on reproductive justice and will have life-threatening consequences for women and people of all genders who can get pregnant.

YWCA Metro Vancouver is a pro-choice organization. Access to safe, free and supportive sexual and reproductive health care is a human right. Abortions save lives.

In Canada, there are no laws governing abortion, but there remain barriers to access, which are heightened in rural and remote communities and for Indigenous and racialized people, people on low incomes and for young women and gender-diverse youth. Community-based abortion clinics continue to struggle financially to keep their doors open.

It is more important than ever to speak out and support organizations advocating for gender rights and justice. At YWCA Metro Vancouver, we will continue our advocacy aimed at ending gender-based violence, while supporting women’s economic stability and access to justice, as these are essential elements to achieving reproductive justice in Canada.
