There Is No Gender Equity Without Trans People

We are outraged by the transphobia and violence directed toward trans people we see on the rise in Canada and around the world. When someone is targeted for simply being, we know we have failed to say enough, do enough and stand up enough.

Recently, YWCA National Board Member Fae Johnstone was invited to be the keynote speaker at YWCA Regina’s Women of Distinction Awards. A finalist herself, and a transgender woman, Fae was selected for her incredible work as a gender equity leader and her commitment to advancing policy that protects the rights and safety of gender diverse people.

After the announcement, Fae was targeted with threatening and hateful messages directed towards her and the trans community at large.

We want to be clear that YWCA Metro Vancouver stands with Fae Johnstone and YWCA Regina, and wholeheartedly condemns transphobia in any form.

We applaud Fae’s courage and resilience in a world where a growing number of people are emboldened to act hatefully and violently.

Fae, our YWCA movement towards achieving gender equity is stronger because of the steadfast advocacy and leadership of inspiring women like yourself. Thank you for continuing to lead. We join in the chorus of support for trans-inclusive feminism. We are firmly in your corner.

To the wider trans and gender diverse community: you are welcome at YWCA Metro Vancouver. Our vision of gender equity includes you.
