Hikes, Friends and Amazing Views: The Nature Zone in Action
For the second year in a row, youth from Metro Vancouver had the chance to experience the beauty of BC’s provincial parks through The Nature Zone, an initiative made possible by the generous support of the BC Parks Foundation. The outings, facilitated by Career Zone, provided opportunities for youth to access parks that might otherwise be difficult to visit, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of spending time in nature. Time outdoors has been shown to reduce stress, boost mood and improve overall wellbeing, making these outings a valuable opportunity for youth to recharge, explore and connect with nature.
Over the 2025 season, The Nature Zone hosted eight outings with more than 85 youth participants, exploring stunning locations including Porteau Cove, Cypress Provincial Park, Shannon Falls, and Cypress Mountain. For many participants, it was their first time visiting these parks.
“It was so fun going to Cypress. I am excited that I was able to enjoy the outdoors. I wouldn’t have made it up to Cypress Park this summer if it wasn’t for BC Parks and Career Zone,” shared one participant.
Another reflected on their visit to Porteau Cove: “I had never been there before. It was really cool to see all the wildlife. I had no idea it was next to the water, that was so cool.”
The outings offered more than just hiking and sightseeing. Participants engaged in interactive activities, learning about wildlife, trees and local ecosystems.
One youth recalled, “On our outing to Porteau Cove, Elliott and the Career Zone team showed us wildlife we could see and different tree types. I have never been to a provincial park before. I have also never seen a crab before, which Elliott showed us on the beach as we don’t see them in my country. Thank you so much Career Zone and BC Parks for this trip!”
The Nature Zone isn’t just about exploration, it’s about creating meaningful connections to nature and teaching youth about the importance of preservation of wildlife and parks so that future generations enjoy.
Thanks to the BC Parks Foundation and their commitment to “Protect Now Enjoy Forever”, The Nature Zone continued to open doors to BC’s incredible natural spaces, ensuring that youth from all backgrounds can enjoy the outdoors, learn from nature and create memories that will last a lifetime.
