Job Description

The Building Maintenance Worker (BMW) works with/assists the Building Maintenance Operators (BMO) and the Building Maintenance Operator, Lead Hand (BMO Lead) in maintaining the building and ensuring it is in good condition. This position also attends to guest requests pertaining to minor room repairs. 

What you’ll be doing: 

  • Assists BMO and BMO Lead in maintaining functional operation of the building systems 

  • Provides immediate attention to guest requests pertaining to minor guest room repairs 

  • Complete preventative maintenance work orders as assigned 

  • Performs general handyperson tasks such as plumbing, mechanical, electrical, HVAC, carpentry and renovation work and other related duties in a safe, efficient and effective manner  

  • Maintains accurate log and maintenance records daily 

  • Performs outside custodial duties such as snow removal, minor landscaping and pressure washing as required  

  • Assists in meeting room set-up and janitorial service in the absence of the Building Services Worker (BSW) 

  • Works various days and shifts and may be required to work extended shifts 

  • Promotes and helps maintain a Health & Safety conscious work environment 

  • Other duties/projects as required/assigned by the Facility Manager 

What you’ll need: 

  • One to two (1- 2) years experience and skills in building maintenance. 

  • General handyperson skills are necessary – plumbing, minor equipment repair, carpentry, HVAC, etc. 

  • Must have a passion for guest service. 

  • Able to maintain a positive and objective outlook in challenging situations.  

  • Must be team oriented but also be able to work independently with little to no supervision. 

  • Ability to handle various hand and power tools in a safe manner. 

  • Knowledge of chemicals and cleaning products (WHIMIS). 

  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and openly in all interactions. 

  • Physical aspects of this position include, but are not limited to: constant standing and walking throughout shift; frequent kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.; ascending or descending stairs and ramps. 

  • The successful candidate will be required to work varying days and shifts. 

  • A valid clear criminal record check (including working with vulnerable populations) is required.  

  • The YWCA Metro Vancouver’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination from COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the YWCA deem it necessary to reintroduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.

  • Previous hospitality experience is an asset.
