Job Description

The YWCA Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants program is a funded initiative (Ministry of Municipal Affairs and IRCC) to support newcomers to Canada who live in North Vancouver, West Vancouver, and the Coast; and have international credentials, training and skills from outside of Canada. YWCA Career Paths participants will work one-on-one with knowledgeable career coaches to gain valuable resources needed to assist them in launching their careers in Canada. This program is free for internationally-trained professionals who meet eligibility requirements. YWCA Career Paths will deliver programming to unemployed or underemployed individuals who have become permanent residents within the last five years and have at least one year of pre-arrival work experience. 

What you’ll be doing: 

  • Strong ability to work with participants with different needs, backgrounds, learning styles and employment goals. 

  • Provide specialized employment services for skilled professional immigrants. 

  • Assess client eligibility set by the ministry and conduct needs assessments. 

  • Facilitate info sessions, soft skills training, and employment readiness workshops and provide one-to-one coaching.  

  • Assist participants in identifying and overcoming employment barriers, setting realistic career goals, and creating and following action plans, mentorship, and networking opportunities. 

  • Assist participants with resumes, cover letters, interview preparation, and labour market information and trend research. 

  • Direct marketing to employers to promote specific candidate skill sets, marketing the right skills to the right job leads. 

  • Provide career coaching as it relates to job placement or work experience for participants. 

  • Develop employment opportunities for candidates by maximizing, implementing, and maintaining a sound marketing strategy. 

  • Meet and recruit employers for work experience engagement and activities, job openings through internal resources, cold calls and emails, and screen potential employee referrals for employers (temporary employment, work placements or sustainable employment). 

  • Assist participants in developing confidence and resilience.  

  • Provide ongoing feedback/input on program development, evaluation and design. 

  • Maintain accurate participant ministry database, records and confidentiality. 

  • Understand the program service model and performance measures set by the contract. 

  • Participate in weekly case conferencing with program staff to discuss participant and employer issues and placement opportunities. 

  • Occasionally may be required to work after hours and on weekends 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

What you’ll need: 

  • Minimum educational requirements: A Bachelor's degree in a related field (education, counseling, social work) or a combination of a community college diploma in life skills counseling. 

  • 3 – 5 years combined experience in Career Counselling and Job Development. 

  • Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills and working knowledge of English and another language  

  • Knowledge of the Canadian Labour Market. 

  • CCDP Certification is considered an asset   

  • Keen understanding of the experience of newcomer individuals in Canada and their available social supports. 

  • Proven work experience as a Trainer, Facilitator or similar role. 

  • Hands-on experience coordinating multiple trainings using online platforms. 

  • Extensive knowledge of instructional design theory and implementation. 

  • Adequate knowledge of learning management systems and web delivery tools. 

  • Familiarity with traditional and modern job training methods and techniques. 

  • Advanced organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple assignments. 

  • Motivated to work independently and as part of a team to deliver exemplary service. 

  • Advanced social media skills and their use in clients' job search process (e.g., LinkedIn). 

  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, simple Survey, Eventbrite, and online platforms. 

  • Demonstrated flexibility and a positive attitude toward change. 

  • A clear Criminal Record Check working with vulnerable populations will be required.
