Job Description

Working closely with the FASD Key Support Coordinator, the assistant position will provide administrative support and support to families with children and youth with FASD and similar neurological conditions. 

What you’ll be doing: 

  • Provide support, education, and advocacy to families with children and youth with FASD and similar neurological conditions. 

  • Mentor families to facilitate an increase in their knowledge, skills, and confidence to become their own best advocates. 

  • Assist the family to select and access appropriate services by providing information on the range of available programs and services.  

  • Identify and address the needs of all family members  

  • Attend integrated team meetings and work closely with medical and school professionals to provide support to the entire family in meeting the emotional, educational and behavioral needs of the child. 

  • Ensure that there are safety plans in place as appropriate 

  • Other duties as required  

What you’ll need: 

  • Previous experience working with the issues affecting children and their families in the Downtown Eastside such as poverty, violence, alcohol and other drug issues 

  • Knowledge of FASD as a brain-based physical disability 

  • Ability to apply a family-centered approach when working with children and youth 

  • Willing to work collaboratively with Aboriginal families and Aboriginal communities 

  • Understanding of youth and women’s addiction issues 

  • Understanding and ability to work within a harm reduction philosophy 

  • Experience working with computers and within Microsoft Word and Excel would be an asset. 

  • Ability to work alone and in a team 

  • A valid clear criminal record check (including working with vulnerable populations) is required.  

  • The YWCA Metro Vancouver’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination from COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the YWCA deem it necessary to reintroduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
