
Pride vs. Prejudice: The Delwin Vriend Story
In 1991, Delwin Vriend was fired from his job. His only "offence” was being gay. When he tried to seek justice, Alberta’s human rights law did not recognize sexual orientation as something worth protecting.
What followed was a legal battle that went all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. The result was a precedent-setting 1998 decision that forced Alberta to add sexual orientation to its human rights law and reshaped equality rights across the country.
