Let's rewrite feminism. True gender equity leaves nobody behind

YWCA Metro Vancouver is dedicated to creating meaningful social change and advancing equity for women and gender diverse people.

Women often lack access to adequate work and fair pay, safe and affordable housing and child care, and are underrepresented in leadership positions, left out of decision-making processes and face gender-based violence and discrimination. Black, Indigenous and Women of Colour, and Two-Spirit, trans and gender diverse people experience these barriers even more acutely.

In our 125th year, YWCA of Metro Vancouver is creating and delivering innovative services that help women stay safe, access housing, enhance their skills, find employment and build community. And to address gender inequity at its roots, we go one step further – fighting for systemic change to build a just and equitable world, where women, families and allies thrive.

Rewrite Feminism marks our commitment to acknowledging the different identities, experiences and perspectives of women, in all their diversity. Because true gender equity means nobody gets left behind.

Nevertheless she persisted until every woman's needs were met
The future is a safe place for gender diverse people

True gender equity means nobody gets left behind

Our Rewrite Feminism campaign updates familiar feminist quotes to be more inclusive.

We know that mainstream feminism hasn’t always been inclusive of Black, Indigenous and racialized people, or the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Rewrite Feminism marks our commitment to acknowledging the different identities, experiences and perspectives of women, Two-Spirit and gender diverse people.

We need to make sure no one is left behind.

HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE

YWCA of Metro Vancouver delivers innovative services that help women stay safe, access housing, enhance their skills, find employment and build community.

And to address gender inequity at its roots, we go one step further – fighting for systemic change to build a just and equitable world, where women, families and allies thrive.

Our programs and services include:

  • Support for single moms

  • Long term housing for single mother-led families

  • Short term and transitional housing

  • Support for women who have experienced abuse

  • Legal supports for women

  • Youth education and mentorship

  • Child care and early learning

  • Employment and training programs

  • Food programs

  • Cultural and Indigenous community supports

We recognize the YWCA’s role in Canada's colonial history and the generational impacts this continues to have on Indigenous peoples. We know that without decolonization - changes to our structures, policies, programs and practices, as well as changes to our larger societal systems, there can be no reconciliation. In our 125th year, we will continue to focus on equity, inclusion and reconciliation.
