When his joy of running was almost halted by injuries, Bassim needed an alternate plan to get in better shape. The diversity of classes at the Health + Fitness Centre now helps him achieve his running aspirations.

Exercise has been a part of Bassim’s lifestyle since the early 2000’s. An outdoors person with a zest for life, he spent hours running and cycling. When his joy of running was almost halted by injuries, he needed an alternate plan to get back to it in better shape. He joined his partner at the Health + Fitness Centre and began his biggest challenge: to dance.

Dancing didn’t come easy; it challenged his coordination and his mind. From dance he branched out to Pilates and Yoga classes and soon was spending upwards of 10 hours a week in a gym environment he once believed would be confining. Pilates and Yoga helped Bassim become more patient, flexible and balanced as they addressed and strengthened the weak points causing the injuries. “The more active you are in a balanced way, the more open your mind is to seeing new opportunities.”

Bassim wondered what he could achieve in fitness within a year. He set a goal to complete 5-50km trail races (ultra-marathons) in one year; with focus and determination, he succeeded.

Bassim credits the diversity of classes and instructors at the Health + Fitness Centre and the environment itself.

“The space that YWCA staff has created is supportive and respectful. When I walk in, I feel right at home.”

What’s next for Bassim? Swimming! Lessons in the pool and training could lead to triathlons and an ironman. He also hopes to inspire others to join. “Life is beautiful, and I want to be in shape to enjoy it.”
