Celebrating Youth: BC Youth Week 2017 events

It's BC Youth Week for first week of May. Young people have always played an active role in the way society has been shaped and now more so than ever they are catalysts for positive change. Whether it's volunteering in a community centre or inventing a phone-charging mug, young people are full of potential and drive.

Youth are a big part of many programs at YWCA Metro Vancouver.  We recognize the critical role they play in informing us about issues and trends that affect them in their day-to-day lives and work with young to better our community through our youth programs and services.

To celebrate the young people in our community, check out these youth-friendly events happening around the Lower Mainland:

 

FREE EVENTS

Voices for Change: Youth Inclusion Art Camp
May 1st, 2017, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre  

A fun and engaging art session to spark conversation around what inclusion in the community means to you. Joined with artist Kat Thorsen and viaSport BC, join us and learn how creative expression can help you tell your story!

Youth Citizenship Awards
May 1st, 2017, 7:00 p.m.
Burnaby City Hall

Join in the celebration Mayor Derek Corrigan presents the Citizenship Awards to recognize the contributions, volunteerism and positive impact of young people in the Burnaby community.

Bar-B-Queer
May 2nd, 2017, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
West Vancouver Community Centre

The Whatever Youth Committee is putting on their third annual Bar-B-Queer event for LGBT*Q+ youth, allies, family and friends. There will be food, karaoke and prizes at this all-ages event.

Youth week FEAST-ival
May 2nd, 2017, 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Cambie Community Centre

Come for free food, prizes, cool booths, fun games and freebies at this Thank-You event to youth for their active involvement in the local community.

Bubble Soccer
May 4th, 2017, 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
West Richmond Community Centre

Join this fun and unique action-packed version of soccer that’s played within an enclosed plastic, personal bubble. There will be hot dogs, refreshments and prizes at the event. Ages 13-18. Registration and parental consent required.

Youth Week Block Party
May 6th, 2017, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Edmonds Community Centre

This will be the biggest Burnaby community event of the week! The Youth Week Block Party will include lots of fun games and activities, an exciting tournament, a DJ, an open mic, some art and of course, a BBQ. Come celebrate youth week and win prizes.

May 7th, 2017, 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Wesbrook Community Centre

The UTOWN@UBC Youth Leadership program is organizing the 4th BC Youth Week Celebration. Come celebrate youth, enjoy free performances, and get some free snacks!

TICKETED/PAID EVENTS

Youth Week Dance
May 5th, 2017, 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Trout Lake Community Centre
$10

Come celebrate Youth Week at this fun and inclusive dance! Contact your local community worker for more information. Tickets at the event.

 

3-on-3 Basketball Tournament
May 5th, 2017, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Bonsor Recreation Complex
$5 per player

The Bonsor Recreation Complex will be hosting a Basketball tournament for Grade 6 and 7s. There will be 3 games followed by a playoff to determine the winners as well as BBQ and awards. Space is limited. Pre-registration required.
