Galentine’s Day: Celebrating Female Friendships

by Jenn Bateman

While a completely fictional holiday, Galentine’s Day is becoming increasingly popular.

The term was first coined in 2010 by NBC sitcom ‘Parks and Recreation’. On the episode called Galentine’s Day, Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope throws her annual Galentine’s Day party for her female friends on the day before Valentine's Day. “It’s the best day of the year,” says Leslie, “ladies celebrating ladies!”

Women across the globe have taken the idea to heart and are throwing their own celebrations of female friendship. Women come together with their closest friends to celebrate their successes, encourage each other or simply share a few laughs.

While Valentine’s day focuses on romantic love and seems to be a holiday exclusively enjoyed by those who have a partner, Galentine’s Day celebrates meaningful friendships and can be celebrated by everyone. It’s a chance to reflect on the women we care about, why they are special and what the relationship means to us. We don’t need a holiday for this, but taking the time to recognize and celebrate the beauty and impact of female friendships during a season of love seems entirely appropriate, not to mention really fun.

At the YWCA, we know the role female friendships play in the lives of women. Our Single Mothers’ Support Groups give single moms a chance to meet, encourage and share resources with each other. Offered in 16 communities across Metro Vancouver, our support groups are a place for women to share their victories and challenges, and to empower and care for one another. The groups are also powerful catalysts for female friendships that are often carried beyond the group.

“This group has been a life saver and a life enhancer for me. I love the friendships that are growing and am so thankful for the support, encouragement and insight from the group.” – Program Participant

“Surrounding myself with such amazing women has helped me through the waves of hard times and see things more clearly. I am truly grateful for this group.” – Program Participant

If you’re a single mom living in Metro Vancouver, consider connecting with a YWCA Single Mothers’ Support Group. They are a great way to meet other single mothers and connect with resources and supports in your community. The groups meet weekly and free child minding is provided.
