While the facility remains closed until further notice, please join us on Facebook for regular workouts. You'll find a variety of options from Pilates, Yoga, dance, cardio conditioning to strength training.  All complimentary to support the health and well-being of our members and the community during this great time of need.  We look forward to seeing you there! 

March 20 Update | Stronger Together

As we continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 outbreak, the Health + Fitness Centre will remain closed until further notice.  Public health authorities will let us know when we are permitted to re-open.  In the meantime, your membership payments will continue to be on hold.  We will let you know the opening date closer to that time.   
Since the facility’s temporary closure announcement on March 16th, we’ve received many encouraging messages and enquiries on how you can help us and our community through this challenging time.  We thank you for your kind words and well-wishes as they have lifted our spirits in many ways.  We're truly stronger together. 
We’ve been changing lives in Vancouver since 1897.  Here are ways you can play a part in the health of the organization while we weather this very challenging time.

  1. Resume membership payments. While we’re non-operational, the payment would be a charitable donation to YWCA Metro Vancouver and is eligible for a tax receipt. Do it for one month, or until we are back open.  Please email Erika Haraguchi at eharaguchi@ywcavan.org with your consent by noon Friday, March 27.
  2. Donate a set dollar amount to YWCA Metro Vancouver.  Your gift ensures that families across Metro Vancouver can connect with the resources they need to move forward with their lives.  A tax receipt will be issued.
  3. Donate essential supplies to Crabtree Corner, a resource and support centre in the Downtown Eastside for women and families.  These household essentials can be dropped off at 533 East Hastings Street, Monday to Friday, between 10 AM - 1:30 PM.
  • Toilet paper
  • Facial tissue  
  • Dry goods (e.g. rice, pasta) 
  • Canned goods (e.g. sauce, soups) 
  • Kid snacks
  • Baby wipes 

4. Take care of yourself and each other.  Find balance wherever you are!

March 16 Update | Temporary Facility Closure 

Our members’ health and well-being are at the core of what we do and why we do it.  For the past several weeks, we have been closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and taking guidance from Canada’s public health officials.  With every measure and protocol in place, your health and safety continues to be our priority.

With this in mind, we have made the important decision to close the facility for two weeks, effective March 17, 2020. We hope to reopen the facility on April 1 and will keep you posted on reopening plans.  All membership fees will be suspended going forward and we will honour any time owed to you for March payments once we resume operation.  

During this extraordinary time, we want to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle with virtual classes from your favourite instructors. Check the Member Alerts page regularly for new workouts or follow us on Facebook for notifications and postings. We may be physically distancing ourselves, but we want to stay connected with you!

March 10 Update | COVID-19

At the YWCA Health + Fitness Centre we are closely monitoring the COVID 19 situation, and are taking guidance from the BC Ministry of Health, the BC Centre for Disease Control, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) as well as the World Health Organization (WHO).  At this time, the risk to Canadians continue to be low.

We know you enjoy your workouts and we value you as a member. During these uncertain times, the workouts may play an even more important role to your overall health i.e. in keeping your immune system strong and reducing your stress.

The Health + Fitness Centre is committed to high standards of health and safety which consists of the following procedures and additional measures. 

  • Limit the maximum number of people to 5 in the hot tub for social distancing
  • Asked those that recently travelled outside of Canada to observe the self-isolation of 14 days
  • Increased our cleaning protocols including the use of effective disinfecting products that kill bacteria and viruses
  • Closed the steam room due to the small and enclosed nature of the space
  • Asked staff, members, and guests to stay home should they feel unwell
  • Provided educational materials to members via e‐newsletters as well as posted content in the facility. Visit the health organizations linked above for information on the COVID‐19
  • Sent communication to all YWCA staff, volunteers and contractors on how prevent the spread of illness
  • Updated our Pandemic Continuity Plan which maps out how we will address the potential of a pandemic.  While the risk in British Columbia is still considered low, this plan is in place to guide us should the situation escalate
  • Developed two new policies – a Pandemic Influenza Exposure Plan and a Pandemic Influenza Human Resources Policy for staff
  • Reviewed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocols with all staff

When you're at the Health + Fitness Centre adopt the following measures in order to safeguard public health and safety.

  • Stay home from the facility if you are not feeling well or if you feel you may have been exposed to the virus
  • Practice regular and thorough hand‐washing before and after your workouts; after coughing, sneezing, blowing your nose; after using the washroom or changing diapers; before preparing food or eating
  • Practice good cough etiquette by coughing into your sleeve or into a tissue (and disposing of the tissue immediately) and washing your hands after, or use hand sanitizer
  • Keep your hands away from your eyes and nose. Your eyes and nose have mucous membranes; germs (on your hands) can enter your body through the mucous membranes of your eyes and nose
  • Practice social distancing - keeping at least one meter away from others 
  • Maintain good personal hygiene and practice good sweat etiquette by placing towels on equipment and mats
  • Wipe down equipment with disinfecting spray and cloth/paper towels before and after equipment use
  • Dispose of used paper towels and put cloth towels in designated laundry bins/chutes 

For those that recently returned from travel or have upcoming travel plans, please keep the following in mind. 

For any travels outside of Canada, please observe the self-isolation of 14 days upon your return, as directed by BC's Health Minister and BC's Provincial Health Officer on March 12, 2020.  Should you develop any concerning symptoms such as a fever, cough, shortness of breathe/difficulty breathing, and sore throat, please connect with your primary care provider, local public health office or call 8-1-1.

As per the CDC "There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs.  Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g. with chlorine and bromine) of pools and hot tubs should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19."
