YWCA Canada Way Burnaby Project
Single mother-led families experience higher rates of poverty and these circumstances can be complicated by intimate partner violence.
YWCA Metro Vancouver is thrilled to be the charity partner at Rock N the Park. It was on her 50th birthday, that Cindy Beedie reached out to the YWCA about a vision she had for a housing project that would support single mothers and their families.
"I have seen first hand the transformation that safe, secure housing can have for women and their children – but just as important are the resources and child care that make it possible for these women to return to work or school and truly transform their families' future. It was from that this vision was born. We’re fortunate to have several amazing project partners who have joined us in this vision – BC Housing and the Mayor, Council and Staff at the City of Burnaby who rose to the occasion in every way – and of course, the YWCA, whose mission couldn’t be more perfectly aligned with the lives we hope to change.

The project has found a home at 4803 Canada Way in Burnaby and will provide single mother-led families with new, safe and affordable homes. The 55 family units will be adjacent to a dynamic 37-space child care centre catering to toddlers and preschoolers. The site is an excellent location near BCIT, transit, parks and schools. Women will be able to access affordable, on-site child care while they pursue educational and employment programs. The YWCA on-site staff will help build a safe community and connect families with wrap-around support including educational bursaries, legal advocacy and employment opportunities.
