Finding Belonging and Building a Career in Canada: Employment Programs for Newcomers in BC
Settling in a new country comes with many challenges, and finding meaningful work is often the biggest one. YWCA Metro Vancouver offers a range of employment programs to support immigrants and refugees as they navigate their career journey and build a new life in British Columbia.
All YWCA employment programs are free and designed to support individuals with lived experience of migration, including women, gender-diverse people, and LGBTQIA+ newcomers and refugees. Each program focuses on career readiness, connection and empowerment, helping participants take their next step with confidence.
YWCA Aspire
YWCA Aspire helps self-identified newcomer refugee women prepare for the Canadian labour market. Through career guidance, workshops and job search support, the program helps participants gain the tools, confidence and connections needed to re-enter the workforce or start a new career path.
“My tip for newcomers is to connect with local community organizations and programs, like YWCA Aspire, that offer support, resources and opportunities to build communities. Feeling at home starts with feeling connected, and these spaces are great for finding belonging and support.” - Nargis Tanai, Program Manager for YWCA Aspire
YWCA Believe
YWCA Believe is a trauma-informed employment program for self-identified LGBTQIA+ and gender-diverse newcomers and refugees. The program provides one-to-one support, group workshops, and a welcoming space to explore employment goals in a safe, inclusive environment.
"Don't be afraid to ask questions, especially when you reach out to the community. The go-to places are the library, community centres and your local YWCA chapter. Even if they don't have the services that might cater to your needs, they will direct you to resources that would match your needs. Be patient, have an open mind and always stay curious about new experiences." - Souvik Ray, Program Manager for YWCA Believe
YWCA Tech Connect
YWCA Tech Connect is a 16-week employment program for self-identifying newcomer women with experience in IT and related fields. The program helps participants gain insights into the Canadian tech industry, build connections and access mentorship to secure fulfilling roles in the field.
“Being Canadian is a privilege. Embrace it by volunteering and giving back to your community. It’s a powerful way to build meaningful connections, foster a true sense of belonging and make Canada your home away from home.” - Ehtesham Azad, Program Manager for YWCA Tech Connect
